24-year old switch-hitting 1B Justin Smoak has shown no signs of progress for the Seattle Mariners in 2011. Smoak has played in 120 games for the Mariners so far this year and he is 98 for 416 (.236 avg, .721 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 14 homers and 52 RBIs. He has now played in 150 games in his first two years with Seattle and he is 125 for 529 (.236 avg, .715 OPS) with 48 runs scored, 19 homers and 66 RBIs. The Mariners are expecting a lot more out of Smoak in the future as he was the centerpiece of the deal with the Rangers last July for Cliff Lee.

The Mariners have shut down 26-year old righty swinging outfielder Casper Wells for the rest of the season due to a severe sinus problem. Wells played in 31 games for the Mariners last year and he was 22 for 102 (.216 avg, .742 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 7 homers, 15 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Wells has played in 95 games for the Mariners & Tigers this year and he was 51 for 215 (.237 avg, .759 OPS) with 30 runs scored, 11 homers, 27 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Wells will get to battle for a starting job in the outfield next spring for the Mariners.

Mike Carp has been hitting the ball well since the Seattle Mariners called him up

25-year old lefty swinging 1B/OF/DH Mike Carp has been the Mariners’ best hitter this year. He has played in 70 games for the Mariners this year and he is 70 for 253 (.277 avg, .809 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 11 homers and 43 RBIs. Carp has now played in 105 games in his first three years with the Mariners and he is 94 for 344 (.273 avg, .789 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 12 homers and 48 RBIs. I’m not so sure where Carp will be playing in the field (or if he will DH), but he will have a regular spot in the lineup in 2012 as the Mariners need all of the offensive help that they can get.

The much traveled 36-year old righty reliever Jamey Wright turned in one of the best seasons of his career for the Mariners in 2011. He has pitched in 58 games (0 starts) for the Mariners so far this year and he is 2-3 with 1 save, a 3.26 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. Wright has now pitched in 86 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Mariners and he is 2-4 with 1 save, a 3.31 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. He has now pitched in 524 games (246 starts) in his first 16 years in the majors and he is 85-121 with 1 save, a 4.94 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP. Maybe Wright has finally found a home as he is pitching the best baseball of his career for the Seattle Mariners.
