The Seattle Mariners sign Prentice Redman

The Mariners have signed 29-year old righty swinging outfielder Prentice Redman to a minor league contract. Redman played in 120 games in AA+AAA ball last season and he was 134 for 454 (.295 avg, .920 OPS) with 97 runs scored, 25 homers, 76 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. Redman has also played in 15 games in his major league career to date and he is 3 for 24 (.125 avg, .484 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 1 homer, 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. The Mariners will give Redman a shot to make the team this spring and he could surprise them in 2009.

The Seattle Mariners have signed 25-year old lefty Chris Seddon and 27-year old righty Sean White to minor league contracts. Seddon pitched in 28 games (27 starts) in AAA-ball last year and he was 10-9 with a 5.09 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP. He has also pitched in 7 games (4 starts) in his major league career in which he is 0-2 with a 8.83 ERA and a 1.96 WHIP. Sean White pitched in 23 games (all starts) in Rookie + AAA ball last season and he was 6-11 with a 5.53 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP. White allowed a stunning 179 hits in only 127 innings in the minors last season. White has also pitched in 15 games (0 starts) in his major league career and he is 1-1 with a 5.60 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. Neither of these pitchers figure much into the Mariners’ pitching plans for the 2009 season.

The Seattle Mariners sign Tyler Walker

The Mariners have signed 32-year old righty reliever Tyler Walker to a 1-year deal. Walker pitched in 65 games (0 starts) for the Giants last season and he was 5-8 with a 4.56 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. He has now pitched in 230 games (1 start) in his major league career and he is 20-17 with 34 saves, a 4.52 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. This was a good move for the Mariners as Walker gives them a veteran who can work late in ballgames.

The Seattle Mariners sign Eric Hull

The Mariners have signed 29-year old righty reliever Eric Hull to a minor league contract. He pitched in 40 games (1 start) in AAA-ball last season and he was 2-3 with a 4.12 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. Hull has also pitched in 5 games (0 starts) in his major league career in which he is 0-0 with a 4.05 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. Hull will have a shot to make the Mariners’ opening day bullpen due to the fact that they don’t have much depth there.

The Seattle Mariners re-sign catcher Jamie Burke

The Mariners have decided to re-sign 37-year old righty swinging catcher Jamie Burke to a minor league deal. He played in 48 games for the Mariners last season and he was 24 for 92 (.261 avg, .629 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 1 homer and 8 RBIs. Burke has now played in 171 games in his major league career and he is 102 for 339 (.301 avg, .730 OPS) with 52 runs scored, 2 homers and 37 RBIs. This was a solid move for the Mariners as it will allow them to start Kenji Johjima at catcher and Jeff Clement at DH.
