Jorge Sosa of the Seattle Mariners suspended by major league baseball

It’s very likely that righty reliever Jorge Sosa will never pitch for the Seattle Mariners. He was suspended for 50 games by major league baseball for testing positive for amphetamines. Sosa pitched in 10 games in AAA-ball for the Mariners this season and he was 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP. What a waste it turned out to be to even sign Sosa. At least he didn’t cost the Mariners much cash.

The Seattle Mariners place Carlos Silva on the D.L.

The Mariners have placed righty starting pitcher Carlos Silva on the 15-day disabled list with a case of right elbow tendinitis. Mariners fans should rejoice as watching Silva pitch is about as fun as having a root canal. Silva should be pitching with a ski mask on the mound as he’s pretty much stealing money every time he toes the rubber. Silva has started 25 games for the Mariners this season and he is 4-14 with a 6.36 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP. He has allowed 191 hits and 18 of them have been homers in only 140 innings pitched for the Mariners this season. The Mariners have recalled 22-year old lefty Ryan Feierabend to take over in the rotation for Silva but he was equally awful in his season debut for the Mariners. He was the losing pitcher against the Twins today as he worked 3 innings and allowed 10 hits and 6 earned runs while walking 1 batter and whiffing 1. Prior to today’s pathetic effort, Feierabend has pitched in 17 games (11 starts) for the Mariners in his career and he was 1-7 with a 6.92 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP. The Mariners were really hoping for better things out of Feierabend this season as he was pitching great in AAA ball. He started 17 games in Rookie League and AAA-ball this season and he was 7-2 with a 2.49 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. The Mariners really hope that Feierabend gets his act together as they need the help.

Jeremy Reed works his way out of the doghouse of the Seattle Mariners

27-year old lefty swinging outfielder Jeremy Reed was in the Mariners’ dog house the last couple of seasons but he has really played well for them in 2008, Reed has played in 62 games for the Mariners this season and he is 51 for 183 (.279 avg, .704 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 2 homers and 20 RBIs. Reed also is an outstanding defensive centerfielder which really helps the pitching staff of the Mariners. If Reed finishes this season strong he will re-establish himself as the starter in the future for the Mariners.

The Seattle Mariners place Willie Bloomquist on the D.L.

The Mariners have placed super sub Willie Bloomquist on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. Bloomquist has played in 71 games for the Mariners this season and he is 46 for 165 (.279 avg, .662 OPS) with 32 runs scored, 9 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. This is a bad break for Bloomquist as he was starting to get a lot of playing time for the first time this season when he got injured. The Mariners have recalled infielder Tug Hulett to replace Bloomquist on the roster. Hulett played in 2 games earlier this season for the Mariners and he was 1 for 4 (.250 avg). Hulett has also played in 90 AAA games this season and he was 100 for 336 (.298 avg, .898 OPS) with 71 runs scored, 14 homers, 47 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. It will be interesting to see how well Hulett plays for the Mariners this time around as he should get some playing time.

The Seattle Mariners pull Miguel Batista from the starting rotation

The Seattle Mariners have finally come to their senses and they have bumped Miguel Batista from the starting rotation. Batista has pitched in 28 games (19 starts) for the Mariners this season and he is 4-11 with 1 save, a 6.80 ERA and a 1.95 WHIP. Batista has allowed an amazing 120 hits and he has also walked 63 batters in only 94 innings this season. The Mariners will likely recall lefty Ryan Rowland-Smith to replace Batista in the rotation. Much like Brandon Morrow, Rowland-Smith should have never been sent to the minors. He has pitched in 37 games (2 starts) for the Mariners this season and he is 2-1 with 2 saves, a 3.44 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP. Rowland-Smith has also started 3 games in AAA ball this season and he is 2-0 with a 2.89 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP. He should do a decent job for the Mariners which is something that can’t be said for Batista who has been awful.
