The Seattle Mariners release 1B Richie Sexson
The Mariners have released 1B Richie Sexson. Sexson was struggling this season for the Mariners as he played in 74 games for them and he was 55 for 252 (.218 avg, .696 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 11 homers and 30 RBIs. Sexson played in parts of 4 seasons for the Mariners…..two good ones and two awful ones. Sexson finished his career as a Mariner having played in 509 games in which he was 447 for 1,835 (.244 avg) with 259 runs scored, 105 homers and 321 RBIs. The Mariners have recalled Tug Hulett from AAA to replace Sexson on the roster. Hulett’s primary position is 2B so don’t expect him to get a lot of playing time in Seattle. Hulett has played in 71 games in AAA ball this season and he is 79 for 262 (.302 avg, .886 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 9 homers, 32 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Look for the Mariners to move a lot of players in the coming weeks.
Thank God. I have been waiting for this for two years. I read this the other day and really, I’m just sorry it didn’t happen sooner. No hard feelings Richie . . . but I’m glad you’re not a Mariner anymore.
I agree with you MarinersFan about Sexson. It was getting hard to watch him whiff at an alarming rate. It’s about time to see what some kids like Bryan LaHair can do. But, it’s going to hurt when the Mariners start trading guys like Raul Ibanez as you can only hope they get something good back unlike the garbage the Pirates got for Nady and Marte.
