The Seattle Mariners have acquired 1B/OF Craig Wilson from the Pirates for a player to be named later. The 31-year old righty swinging Wilson has been playing in AAA ball this season. Wilson has played in 71 games in AAA ball this year for the Pirates and he is 50 for 217 (.230 avg, .723 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 10 homers and 27 RBIs. The Mariners might bring up Wilson pretty soon and let him play some first base which is suddenly an open position with the release of Richis Sexson. Wilson has played in 698 games in his major league career and he is 527 for 2,010 (.262 avg, .827 OPS) with 303 runs scored, 99 homers and 292 RBIs. This was a good low risk/high reward move for the Mariners as Wilson has been a decent player in the majors during his career.

The Seattle Mariners place Erik Bedard on the D.L.

The Mariners have placed lefty starting pitcher Erik Bedard on the 15-day disabled list with stiffness in his left shoulder. Bedard has started 15 games for the Mariners this season and he is 6-4 with a 3.67 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. This will hurt the Mariners who can’t be happy with Bedard’s performance this season. He’s on the trading block but there is no way that the Mariners will get back the caliber of players that they traded for him last winter. It also doesn’t help that he’s a tad fragile. The Mariners have recalled 26-year old righty Jared Wells to replace Bedard on the roster. Wells has pitched in 35 games in AAA (0 starts) this season and he is 1-3 with 15 saves, a 5.20 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. Wells also has pitched in 2 games with the Padres this season and he is 0-0 with a 6.00 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP.

The Seattle Mariners release 1B Richie Sexson

The Mariners have released 1B Richie Sexson. Sexson was struggling this season for the Mariners as he played in 74 games for them and he was 55 for 252 (.218 avg, .696 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 11 homers and 30 RBIs. Sexson played in parts of 4 seasons for the Mariners…..two good ones and two awful ones. Sexson finished his career as a Mariner having played in 509 games in which he was 447 for 1,835 (.244 avg) with 259 runs scored, 105 homers and 321 RBIs. The Mariners have recalled Tug Hulett from AAA to replace Sexson on the roster. Hulett’s primary position is 2B so don’t expect him to get a lot of playing time in Seattle. Hulett has played in 71 games in AAA ball this season and he is 79 for 262 (.302 avg, .886 OPS) with 55 runs scored, 9 homers, 32 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Look for the Mariners to move a lot of players in the coming weeks.

Rich Dorman has been outstanding in the minors for the Seattle Mariners

29-year old righty starting pitcher Rich Dorman has been outstanding in the minors this season. But he might not get a chance in the majors because the Mariners have a rotation full of rich, overpaid pitchers. Dorman has started 19 games in AA+AAA ball this season and he is 9-3 with a 2.77 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. He has only allowed 94 hits in 113.2 innings in the minors while whiffing 102 batters which shows that he has decent stuff. Maybe he will get a chance with the Mariners if they can trade one of the rich guys this month.
